Note: The gorge can be a very hazardous segment to paddle. Running it
for the first several times should be done in the company of experienced
gorge paddlers.
PUT-IN : Access Point 26 EXPERTS ONLY, Tariffville Park,
Simsbury, CT
Directions : From Rt. 10 north in Simsbury, take Rt. 315 east for 1.5
miles. Go up hill and continue straight onto Winthrop Street in the
Tariffville section of Simsbury. Turn left onto Main Street and go .2 mile.
Just prior to "Hayes Landing" sign, turn right onto the gravel road into
the park. Then follow a dirt road to the end where it meets the river.
PUT-IN : Access Point 27 EXPERTS ONLY, Tariffville Gorge, East Granby, CT
Directions : This access point is just upstream of the beach at Tariffville
Gorge on river left. From Simsbury, take Rt. 10 to Rt. 315 east to Rt. 189
east to Rt. 187 north. After crossing the Farmington River on Rt. 187, take
the first right turn onto Spoonville Road. Then take an immediate right
turn at bottom of the hill onto Tunxis Avenue and proceed under the Rt. 187
bridge to the end of the road. A foot trail on the left between two large
concrete blocks will take you to the beach. The put-in is located upstream
of the beach on river left just above Sandy Beach Rapids.
PUT-IN : Access Point 28 ALL PADDLERS, Rt. 187 Bridge, East Granby, CT
Directions : From Simsbury, take Rt. 10 to Rt. 315 east to Rt. 189 east to
Rt. 187 north. After crossing the Farmington River on Rt. 187, take the
first right onto Spoonville Road. Then take an immediate right at bottom of
the hill onto Tunxis Avenue and proceed to a point under the Rt. 187 bridge
where you will find the put-in which also doubles as a take-out for the
Tariffville Gorge.
TAKE-OUT : Access Point 29, Rainbow Reservoir Boat Launch, Windsor,
CT
Directions : From Simsbury, take Rt. 10 to Rt. 315 east to Rt. 189 east to
Rt. 187 north. From Rt. 187, north of the Farmington River bridge, turn
right onto Seymour Road and then make a right onto Rainbow Road. Then turn
right onto Merriman Road. The access to the state boat launch is .2 mile on
your left. From Rt.91, take Rt. 20 east (Bradley Field exit) and turn
right onto Hamilton Road exit, then left at end of exit onto Hamilton Road
and finally right onto Rainbow Road for 1.1 miles and left onto Merriman
Road. Access to the state boat launch is .2 mile on your left. This area
and the reservoir can have heavy motorboat traffic including speedboats and
water skiers, yet offers good fishing.
