Governor M. Jodi Rell announced this week $758,905 in grants for projects in 14 communities in the Farmin
gton River Watershed. Funds for the grants are available as the result of court settlements involving violations of clean water laws and environmental damage to the river and its watershed. The Farmington River Watershed Association was awarded two of the grants, totaling $110,500, to pursue engineering studies for fish passage enhancement at two dam sites: the Spoonville Dam in Bloomfield/East Granby and the Winchell-Smith Dam in Farmington. While the ultimate goal of FRWA’s projects is to improve fish habitat, FRWA will work closely with DEP, landowners, the towns, and river stakeholders to ensure that the engineering alternatives generated by the studies address varied uses of the river.
